Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale Full Name: Gareth Frank Bale
Born: 16 July 1989
Hometown: Cardiff, Wales
Playing Position: Originally left-back, now an attacking player
Current Club: Tottenham

Originally spotted by Southampton football club when he was just 9, Gareth was a very fast runner in his youth and it's that extraordinary acceleration that marks him out from other players.
He began his professional career at just 16 and quickly became renowned as a free kick specialist through scoring some spectacular spot kick goals. At that time his skills with his left foot had secured him a place as left-back and that was why the only goals he got were likely to be when bought forward to take the free kicks.
Success at Southampton led to a massive offer from Tottenham just a year later and he duly made the move. However things did not go well as he sustained a long term injury after just a few months which kept him out for most of the season. On his return the following year he had a very bad run of form and was remarkably on the losing side in a run of 24 matches.

So it was an incredible 2 years after signing for Tottenham before he was on the winning side, but what a turn around from then. He quickly developed into a very high quality player scoring many goals despite still playing at left-back. When the original left-back returned from a long injury, instead of Gareth being sidelined the manager saw the chance to move him upfield to left wing for the 2010/2011 season. From there Gareth truly made his mark, especially noticeable in a Champions League match where his side were 4-0 down in the 1st leg before Gareth scored a hat-trick to give them a fighting chance in the 2nd leg. In the subsequent match Gareth also played a blinder to help his side to a 3-1 win and progression to the next round. He was named man of the match and later on in the season was awarded player of the year.

Big clubs have made enquiries to buy Gareth for astronomical sums but he has returned Tottenham's loyalty to him by agreeing to stay with the club until at least 2015.
